This is Bekele. He is from Ethiopia but he lives in Lae Lae's community now and "Beke" comes to Lae Lae's Birthday Party for Mother Earth. He says that "she (Mother Earth) is at least a gazillion years old and she takes care of us - so we need to thank her with a birthday party". He is studying the earth to see how everyone has one home, Mother Earth. He brings his gift to the party which is a recipe for making a paper moon because we all share the same moon too. Lae Lae's friends from Colombia, Italy, Japan and Ireland join them to bring gifts from their homes on the earth to share in the birthday party. They each invite children from around the world to do the same.
As Lae Lae says in the first book of the Lae Lae book collection, "Mommy says all children everywhere are special. We speak many languages and we live in many countries but children are the same everywhere. All children want to love and to be loved. It's important to care for the children. We are the future of the world." So true!

To really appreciate the beauty and majesty of the planet that we call Mother Earth, we just have to slow down to look at the wonderful creatures that call Mother Earth their home. And if we truly study the intricacy of a single creature such as the butterfly, we can't help but be amazed and appreciate the miracle of their creation.
Butterflies come in many different sizes and in many brilliant colors. Some live longer than others and some migrate long distances while others can stay in place over the cooler months. But they all have one thing in common. They have four distinct life periods. A butterfly begins as a tiny egg laid on a leaf; then it emerges as a caterpillar and builds a chrysalis or pupa around itself; they hibernate there while completing the amazing metamorphosis into the beautiful and delicate adult butterfly. The life cycle of a butterfly is one of the more amazing processes in nature. In the activity pages of A Birthday Party for Mother Earth, I illustrate the four distinct phases in the life cycle of a butterfly simplified for little folks to understand. I encourage everyone to find a way to bring their children closer to nature to appreciate what we have on our Mother Earth and to realize the care we must take of our mutual home. Those of you who know me, have read my children's books or perhaps read my blogs, probably recognize that I am a huge environmentalist and a big animal lover, both those that are wild and those that are domesticated. So when I received news this week that my book, A Birthday Party For Mother Earth received an international Book Excellence Award from Literary Excellence Inc. of Ontario, Canada, I was thrilled. As per Literary Excellence, "The 'Book Excellence Awards' is an international awards competition dedicated to providing authors and publishing professionals with the opportunity to showcase their work on a global platform. Books that have received a Book Excellence Award have been recognized for their high quality design, writing and overall market appeal" and my book was chosen for the top award in the area of children's education! In A Birthday Party for Mother Earth Lae Lae and her friends celebrate Mother Earth and all that she and her creatures have given us. The book features a story, activity pages, parent's notes and special fact pages about the earth. Last year the Lae Lae collection was awarded a Family Choice Award and now this book has been singled out for this award. The Book Excellence Awards are open to both books published in the traditional manner and self published books, which mine are. My collection is on Amazon. My Lae Lae collection is my small contribution to the future of our world by encouraging us to nurture our children and to bring them up to care for each other and all the animals, creatures and natural environment that we share on our wonderful Mother Earth. As Lae Lae says "Mother Earth gives us so much and we must thank her and take care of her." Thank you Mother Earth ... and thank you to Literary Excellence for this award. |
